With its main headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is responsible for housing and rehabilitating all convicted felons in all the state prisons in the state of Mississippi.

Incarceration can be brutal and agonizing for both the locked-up individual and family members or friends. Sometimes after a sentence, an inmate may be moved to a different facility from the one they were initially sentenced to. If that happens, the family may lose touch with their detained kin since inmates have no contact with the outside world.

That's why different states across the United States have created online platforms and inmate search tools to help interested persons lookup and locate inmates. In Mississippi, the state's prison systems and inmate information is managed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

How To Find Information About Mississippi State Inmate Offender

Interested persons or family members can obtain any information they need about incarcerated individuals from the Mississippi Inmate Records. These records contain personal and administrative data on detained persons across all state prisons in the state.

These facilities include state prisons, county, city, and police jails. Private prisons and penal centers are also run by MDOC, while state prisons are within the MDOC's jurisdiction.

The county, city, police jails, and detention centers are run and operated by the regional county Sheriff's offices. The information contained in these records includes inmate personal details such as full names, date of birth, gender, race, nationality, and physical description.

Additionally, official information such as offense committed, date of arrest,  charges, bail or bond information, ongoing sentences, incarceration facility, designated offender number, and expected release date.

Under Mississippi state laws, this information can only be made available to interested persons upon request. The persons requesting this information should have valid reasons and rights to obtain it.

Mississippi  State Prison System

Mississippi State Prison System comprises state correctional facilities, city, county, police jails, and private regional correctional centers. There are also community work and restitution centers located throughout the states.

Local and regional law enforcement agencies manage most prisons and holding facilities. However, all state and private correctional facilities are operated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The MDOC is the only state body mandated to disseminate information on inmates serving time in institutions within its jurisdiction. Furthermore, Mississippi state has four independent federal prisons and one federal prison camp, all under the jurisdiction of the federal government.

The operational guidelines of these correctional facilities are determined by the medical health conditions of the resident inmates, their backgrounds, and associations.

These factors decide which facility an inmate should be admitted to based on its security level, and the discretion, and professionalism of the facility's administrative staff.

However, the MDOC is responsible for providing the required guidelines by state and federal penal laws to state-run facilities. County and city law enforcement agencies further adopt the same procedures.

However, inmate information that concerns inmates in temporary confinement, such as those sentenced to county and city jails, may only be obtained at the county level.

To search for an inmate:

Step 1: Visit the  Mississippi Department of Corrections website, then click on the inmate search option. The link takes you to the information below, where you choose to search by name or ID.

Step 2: Enter the known name of the inmate in the search box as shown

Step 3: Click search and get the results for john below. Note that the results have options where you search for the name you want

Step 4: Choose the inmate you need details about then, click on the name for more info. (Duane John)

If you want an alternative way to search for the inmate, you need the inmate’s ID. The search process is specific to one inmate whose ID should be known.

The search for Sex Offenders

If you suspect an offender, you must follow the procedure below to confirm if the suspect is indeed an offender. 

Step 1: Visit the Mississippi Sex Offender Registry website with registered sex offenders, read through the disclaimer, and then agree to proceed. Enter the code and click continue

Step 2: Enter the offender’s known name in the provided search box

Click search for results. Note that the names of inmates related to Jeff will display. Choose the offender you are interested in and get the information. Results show by geographical location and by name. For the offender’s geographical location, click on the map.
